Chapter 30

Saturday comes around quickly, and Jane and I are getting ready for our night out. I’m trying to hide my disappointment that Gary and I haven’t arranged a fourth date. He’s been quieter the last few days after intense texting. He has text saying he’s out with his mates but will text later. I don’t want to keep texting him. I know it’s a turn off for people. I have to try and remain cool and calm even though I’m desperate to ask about us being exclusive.

Tonight, however, is Jane’s night, and I can’t make it about me. My dating disasters and now Gary have dominated conversations for over two months. She’s been single so long, disinterested in relationships, so it fills me with hope that she now has a sparkle in her eyes. I just hope Barney Boy is out tonight, that he’s single and interested in women.

I have to admit we look pretty good. Jane is wearing an off-the-shoulder lace midi dress that shows her toned figure, and I’m wearing a black sequin above-the-knee dress that has the right level of glam and Christmas sparkle. Teamed with black heels and my Gucci clutch that I bought in New York with Liam a few years ago, I feel celebrity chic. Bobbi Brown lip gloss and smoky eyes finish my look. Despite feeling a little flat inside, I present as a confident, carefree woman.

‘You’ll have to do a load of your stinky farts tonight to keep the blokes away,’ Jane says, laughing.

‘Well, I did have some homemade soup earlier.’ I make a fart noise.

Our Uber driver soon arrives and takes us into the Fish Quay part of town, where the gym group are meeting. Jane and I have the odd pleasantry with some of the gym folk, but we don’t know anyone in great detail, always talking away to each other. It’s going to feel a bit strange seeing people usually sweating over the stepper all glammed up. But hey, it’s a night out.

There’s already a crowd, and we spot two of the instructors, who are lovely and who Jane and I usually speak with.

‘Hey, ladies, you look great,’ Donna, one of the instructors, says.

‘So do you,’ I reply, thinking how different Donna looks glammed up compared to in her usual gym leggings and vest.

After exchanging pleasantries, Jane and I go to the bar.

‘I didn’t see him, did you?’ she asks, disappointed.

‘I don’t think so, but it’s hard to tell when people aren’t wearing gym clothes.’

We order drinks, two Southern Comforts and lemonades, and return to the group, which has a number of small groups chatting away. Some are sat down, some are stood hovering around. We smile at a few regulars as we sip our drinks and feel a bit school dance-ish. As more people arrive, Jane and I begin to relax.

‘If he doesn’t turn up, we can just shoot and go and do our own thing or get a taxi into town?’ Jane suggests.

‘Sounds good.’

We get another drink in as the bar begins to fill.
